It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to ask them a question about your Dundas wedding that they don’t know the answer to and when it comes to tips and advice… they are your girls!
They’ve come up with some FAQs that they hope will help you with the planning of your wedding and, of course, on the day itself.
“To the wedding couple – set aside 10 minutes throughout the day to see each other and really take in what is happening. If you are camera shy, try to get at least one photo that you will be happy with”
“Remember to cater for any children. Drawing books are a good way to entertain them during the reception. If there are a number of young ones attending a crèche company is useful”
“Seriously consider the time of your ceremony so that you have plenty of time to get ready, especially if you have lots of bridesmaids. This will also give you enough time to enjoy a glass of bubbly and eat something so that your stomach doesn’t rumble during the ceremony!”
“Ensure that your bridesmaids know how to fasten your dress and ‘hook and loop’ your dress for dancing”
“To all the grooms - don't feel as though you have to stand at the top of the aisle once all of your guests are seated as your bride may be a little late! You can stand up at the last minute”
“Don’t put your veil over your face until you reach the foot of the aisle – lipstick or gloss ruin your veil! But, don’t be too precious about your dress during the day – just have fun”
Yes. If you would like to marry at a preferred location you are more than welcome to have your drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening reception here at the castle afterwards. The rates on this website and in your brochure apply. The bride and groom are still able to prepare at the castle and then travel to the ceremony venue. Our team will be on hand to make sure that enough time is left for travelling and to make sure the bride doesn’t bump into the groom!
If you are considering travelling from another ceremony venue to Dundas Castle for your wedding day you should consider the distance between the two venues and whether the traffic is going to delay you and your guests. You may want to provide your guests with transport or give them directions to the castle. While this does give you more opportunities for photographs at different locations, you may wish to consider your guests and think about whether you want to provide any entertainment while they wait for you.
The Great Hall within the Auld Keep can seat up to 100 guests. At the start of 2011 we built a minstrels’ gallery in the Great Hall which allowed for our numbers to increase from 90 to 100. This means that there is space for 10 guests to sit on the gallery and as an option there is space for 10 more guests to stand in the galley which could take your numbers up to 110. By hiring in a video link you can make use of the 3 main rooms in the Auld Keep by filming the ceremony and showing it in the Armoury and Stag Chamber in real time. This takes the capacity of the Auld Keep to 152. The alternative locations and capacities for your ceremony are: the Stag Chamber – 16, the Croquet Room – 80 and the Pavilion – 180. For outdoor weddings the guest number maximum depends on the location, which our wedding coordinators can advise you on.
Yes. There are some spectacular locations for an outdoor wedding here at Dundas Castle near Edinburgh, Scotland and our wedding coordinators will be able to talk these through with you. You are able to have either a religious or humanist ceremony outdoors on the estate but we always advise that you select an indoor option just in case! We require your final numbers 10 days prior to your wedding so that catering can be arranged and table plans finalised. Wedding packages and bedroom numbers are fixed 6 weeks from your wedding.
‘Carriages’ are at midnight. We are happy to help guests call taxis and there are bus and taxi supply companies on our recommended suppliers list. For guests staying in the castle bedrooms we will set up a residents bar in the library. This provides a chance for you and your close friends and family to relax by the fire while you enjoy a final drink and recall special moments from earlier in the day.
We have a nine-hole golf course and are happy to give up to eight passes complimentary for a round before the ceremony. This is, of course, weather dependant and may not be possible if there is a competition on that day. We also have a 4×4 course, quad biking track and a clay pigeon area. Our wedding coordinators will be able to advise you on availability for golf and will give you information on any other activities that you are considering.

Marriage Schedules must be handed in to the registrar of the district in which the ceremony will take place within 3 months of the date of the wedding and no later than 15 days before the date. For Dundas Castle weddings you will need to contact the district registrar in South Queensferry – 0131 331 1590. The marriage schedule can not be issued back to the bride and groom more than seven days before the date of the wedding and may only be collected by the bride and groom. The registrar will be able to tell you when it can be collected.

The speeches should be brief and typically should take no more than 5-15 minutes each. A nervous speaker who would like to do the bare minimum can simply concentrate on the main purpose of the speech which is to propose the toast and thank people. It is becoming increasingly more popular for the bride to say a few words if she wishes but it is seldom expected of her.
There is no set time that is considered to be more appropriate for the speeches. Whether it is during the drinks reception or before or after the Wedding Breakfast.
Person who gives the bride away ~ says a few words about the couple and proposes a toast to them.
Groom ~ begins by responding to the toast on behalf of the bride and himself. Following on, the groom proposes a toast to the bridesmaids.
Best Man ~ he replies on behalf of the bridesmaids, gives his speech and reads out any emails and cards.
